I have revered physicians and medicine since I was a child in the 50s, one of the last decades of the ‘golden age’ of medicine. Memories of feeling safe and cared for by my pediatrician, Dr. Fred Bush, are still vivid today…as is being lined up in the halls of Rochester’s PS #11 to receive the oral polio vaccine.

Working for Dr. Jerome Rudolph (my first boss) at the UR School of Medicine validated my enduring reverence. While working in CME at UCSD School of Medicine, I found my calling—to serve and care for physicians so they may care for others. This long and winding road led to the creation of the 2011 and 2012 Osler Symposia, sponsored by the Endorphin Power Company— a magical place where people came together to do good and experiment with their dreams.

Now, through our new organization, we are producing symposia that create a safe environment where physicians and nurses can gather, learn, have fun, and re-embrace their calling and love for their professions. Sir William Osler, recognized Father of Modern Medicine, has become my ‘patron saint’ and guiding light. His words inspire me as they have physicians around the world for over a century. “To have striven, to have made an effort, to have been true to certain ideals — this alone is worth the struggle.”
